Traffic signs play an important role in the provision of driver information and have a major effect on road safety and the efficiency of the road network.

Clear and efficient signing is an essential part of highway and traffic engineering. Road users depend on signs for information and guidance; highway authorities depend on them for the efficient working and the enforcement of traffic regulations, and as an aid to road safety. Signs must give provide their message clearly. The message must be unambiguous and understood instantly and the positioning of the sign must be appropriate to the road and speed conditions.  Uniformity in the design of traffic signs is vital - shape, colour and letter height must be appropriate for the signs specific location. The Department of Transports' Traffic Signs Manual provides information on the layout and design of traffic signs and well as guidance of their positioning.
